6000th Post in December

Well, and I missed it altogether.  But at some point in December 2020, this blog, my oldest blog passed the 6,000th post.  This actually makes post 6059.

This, as I said, was my very first blog (I now have eight of them).

I was returning from a visit with my mom in North Carolina and stopped at my nephew and niece's place in White House, Tennessee (just north of Nashville).  I had been thinking about starting a blog and I knew my niece was good at this computer stuff and she set this blog up and off I went.  Thanks Andrea.

2021 marks the 15th year of this blog.  My very first post was April 25, 2007 and I wrote about Dwight, Illinois, and its new Route 66 coffee place, the newly redone Ambler-Becker gas station and Smatterjax's (the old Fedderson's).

Well, It Wasn't a Complete Disaster (Actually Had Some Success) in a Battle With New Technology

All of the blogs I make entries for today are being done on the new PC which  I was able to set up yesterday all by my self.  I am so proud of myself.

It  will take me a long time to figure out how to use it, but maybe there is hope.  Maybe I'm just  somewhat technologically challenged.

Actually, this is one of the times when I am sorry Liz and I didn't have kids as they would have grown up with all this quickly changing technology and I sure would have liked to have had one of them around yesterday and in the days to come while I am trying to figure out how to use it.

A reckon that is too late now.

Oh well, somewhat success WAS MINE yesterday.

Now, if I could just figure out how to get sound and turn it off.

Doing Battle With Modern Technology Today: Setting Up a New PC

In a little while I venture into the Great Unknown as I trepidly approach setting up the new HP all-in-one computer downstairs.

Believe me, I am not looking forward to it as technology pretty well buries me.

But, I will do my best.

Henry Ford Made America Smaller-- Part 3: Ford the Bill Gates of His Time

Henry Ford's true genius lay in his vision of low cost transportation for the common man. (I've head it said that he put the people of the United States on wheels.) Until Ford came along, only the rich could afford automobiles. It was Ford's idea to sell low-cost, no-frills, dependable cars.

Today, more than 240 million vehicles are registered in the U.S.. (Sometimes, when I'm out driving, I think they are all in front of me or coming toward me when I want to make a left turn. We personally have four of those horseless carriages.)

Bill Gates' innovations conquered communication in the late 20th century. Henry Ford conquered transportation in the early part of the century. "Both men took an arcane device and made it indispensable in everyday life. Plus, these men brought about "countless spin-off businesses, social genres and enterprises both criminal and benevolent."

From a Motel

My first-ever post about the road and from on the road. One result of the lightning strike a few weeks ago is this here brand-spanking new laptop. In the past, there was no e-mail checking or even blogging unless the motel had a pc in the lobby, then, of course, you'd have to wait or watch your time if others were waiting for it.

BUT, "NOT NO MORE"

As I said, we were jolted into the 21st century.

Liz learned how to use it right away. Other than my mom's laptop, I had never used a laptop before, but at least I found out from her that you could have a mouse added to it. That little finger screen at the bottom would take some getting used to. Long live the MOUSE.


MOTEL GAMES

Made it to Litchfield yesterday with fun and games at check in at the motel. Liz had made reservations a month ago when we finally definitely decided to come here for the Route 66 Festival. From all we were picking up, Litchfield didn't seem to be doing much with this yearly national event.

They had no record of our reservation and had we come a short time later, we wouldn't have had a room at all. As it was, the room is on the second floor and we requested the first, and just one queen-sized bed, not a good thing for people used to a king-size. Then, the pool wasn't open, something we were looking forward to using.

This motel was originally a Best Western on Route 66 and Liz and her parents stayed here often while driving from Chicago to visit family in Kansas City. We'd also stayed here a few times since our introduction to Route 66 back in 2002.
