All this month, Chicago's Drive, WDRV 97.1 FM (simulcast on 96.9 FM) is letting listeners tell them where to go on its long-running Ten At Ten show, where they play ten songs in a row without commercials and either about a specific year or a theme.

Today's show was the American Road Trip and was compiled by Shelby Dean of Berwyn, Illinois.  Sorry, Shelby, all I can think about is Svenghouli's "BERWYN!!!"

She started in Chicago, then to Louisiana, New York City, Georgia, California, back to Chicago, Winslow, Arizona, Philadelphia, Alabama and ended in Hollywood.  Before you read the song titles, see if you can guess the songs that took us there.

My only problem with her ten was when she introduced the Eagles' "Take It Easy" and just said that people stayed in motels in Winslow, Arizona, and nothing about it being on ROUTE 66.  You'd think she would have since Route 66 went through her town of Berwyn (BERWYN!!!)   He was standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, right there on Route 66.  They even have a Standing On the Corner Route 66 Festival every year.

Bucket List of Illinois Events to Visit-- Part 1: Groundhog Days and Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor Festival

This was in honor of Illinois' Bicentennial of statehood last year.

1.  GROUNDHOG DAYS,  Woodstock  Around Feb. 2, Groundhog Day, you know.  Site of movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray.  Activities over the whole weekend.

2.  BLESSING THE BIKES,  Alto Pass   Motorcyclists kick off season in Shawnee National Forest.  Late April.

3.  RED CARPET CORRIDOR FESTIVAL, Joliet to Towanda along Route 66.  Each of 13 towns has something going on that weekend.  Early May.  There is also a Blue Carpet Corridor Festival for cities south of Springfield in September.

4.  BIKE THE DRIVE , Chicago    For one morning in late May, cars are kicked off Lake Shore Drive and bicyclists get their shot.

22 Words That Have a Different Meaning in Chicago-- Part 1: LSD

First the meaning else where.  Then the meaning in Chicago.

1.  LSD--  A mind blowing drug, but in Chicago it stands for Lake Shore Drive along the Lake Michigan waterfront.  From that song by Alliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah.

2.  SNOW DAY--  Elsewhere, it means that school is canceled and cars crash.  In Chicago it means that cars might not even start because of the cold, or, because of the snow, you might not be able to find them if parked outside or, if in a  garage, you can't get it out through the snow drift.

3.  APRIL--   Elsewhere it means spring.  But in Chicago it means it is still winter and all those flowers who stupidly push up are killed.

Let's Use that Riverfront

Cities and towns across the US are discovering that there is money to be made in their riverfronts. And that is not to mention the great aesthetics of a water view. Chicago is among these with it's mile-long Riverwalk between Lake Shore Drive and Franklin Street. This is Mayor Richard M. Daley's project, and yesterday, he announced that seven summertime businesses were going to be opening along it.

Five of them will be outdoor cafes offering food from French to hot dogs. There will also be a bicycle rental place.

Mayor Daley sees this as only the beginning and I would imagine he hopes to have something along the lines of San Antonio's famed River Walk. That was an impressive place when we visited it.

One problem to be overcome are the bridge structures between the two roads. Plans are for eight under-bridge pedestrian walkways extending 15-20 feet out into the river. Each one will cost an estimated $5 million.
