That Great Driving Song: The "I-95 Song"

Check it out on You Tube.  Also called the "I-95 As____ Song."

Someone dedicated this to the presidential election between the Hillary and the Donald.

Actually, this is what you politely say when someone cuts you off.

Jimmy Buffett does a great rendition of it.

"Were you born an as_____  Or did you work on it your whole life?  Either way it worked out fine 'cause you're an as_____ tonight."

Also, a great song when you get mad at certain motorists when you're driving your car.  Sing this and avoid getting mad.

When the Going Gets Hot, the Dazed Go Outside Anyway-- Part 1

Continuing with our Big Oil Staycation, sticking close to home as a protest against the ridiculous gas prices. And, it is getting H-O-T around here. Maybe all that Global Warming we've been hearing about.

Sure is plenty to do around here.

THURSDAY JULY 14TH-- Out boating around Fox Lake looking at damage from Monday's storm and there was a lot. Fox Lake finally got power back today. Stopped at Electric Harbor and had a couple beers and enjoyed the view from their tiki bar.

Sadly, we heard the tree the bald eagles nested in near the Grasslake Road Bridge near Blarney Island was knocked down. Went by it and it was, but one mature and one juvenile eagle perched in a nearby tree.

Drove to Antioch, Illinois, for the first night of their Taste of Summer celebration. Sat out on the deck behind The Lodge of Antioch while waiting for the show to begin and enjoyed retro beer, PBR, and 25 cent wings. Their barbecue wings are great as are the Cajun. All of the Usual Suspects agreed these were outstanding wings and a great price. They also have 25-cent medium peel-and-eat (deveined) shrimp everyday, but we were too full to enjoy them.

A Jimmy Buffett band, Pirates Over 40, had a show at the band shell. They do have one 49-year-old "youngster" in the band. Great show and lots of folks dancing and singing along. Played not only JB, but Zak Brown and the other country/beach acts as well as reggae. More fun than folks should be allowed and we'll definitely be seeing them again.

Jimmy Buffet Don't Love Us

I had to tell this story that happened Feb. 26th in Panama City Beach, Florida.

We were at the Calypso Bar and Grill across from the Driftwood Lodge on our last night in town and sitting outside at their back tiki bar overlooking the small lake, having a beer, and listening to a one man band who said he was impersonating a band and playing great music when a group of party folk came in.

Judging from the beads, they had evidently been down at the St. Andrew's Mardi Gras parade all afternoon and had also been to a few places before getting to us and definitely feeling no pain.

One guy was especially funny, who immediately asked the entertainer to play a song, "Anything as long as it wasn't Jimmy Buffett!!" At which point, the guy on the stage started strumming the introduction to "Pencil Thin Mustache" which really got the guy going.

At one point, he threatened to jump into the lake butt naked if Jimmy Buffett was played, which started another Buffett song. Someone yelled that wouldn't be fair to the gators in the water if he did.

Then, we heard that even though Buffett has the tourist rip-off Margaritaville at Pier Point Park, that Jimmy didn't love us here at PCB.

Fortunately, the entertainer played another guy's song, so the guy calmed down a bit.

I kind of agree with the guy, that Buffett these days seems more interested in how much money he can make than with his fans. Just go into any of his Margaritaville stores and look at the prices of anything.

The Merriest of Merry

I would like to wish all my road buddies and preservationists a very Merry Christmas.

I'm sitting here at the old 'pute and two-fingered typing away while watching and listening to my all-time favorite favorite seasonal movie, "A Christmas Story." Hey Ralphie, "You'll put your ....." Thank you TBS for the 24 hour marathon!!! I'm working on my second time through.

It is also Jimmy Buffett's 61st birthday today, one of my favorite performers. Can he Really be 61?

Found--One Pull Tab Beer Can in the Chain

Speaking of history, this past Wednesday, while out on the Chain of Lakes in my boat, I came across a can floating in Fox Lake by Mineola Bay. As I usually do, I drifted up by it and pulled it out of the water.

It was an Old Style beer can. At first I thought someone must have thrown it in during the weekend, but, when I looked at the top, I noticed it was an old pull tab, where it came off completely. This has to be an old can, that was underwater for a long time. An anchor probably dislodged it.

How long had it been under the water. I did a little Wikipedia research and found out that the new stay tabs had pretty-well completely replaced the old pull tabs by the early 1980s, so this can is probably at least 25 years old. It would be interesting to know its story.

A LITTLE ALUMINUM CAN HISTORY

The aluminum can that holds most pop and beer we now drink, was invented in 1959. Before that, there were aluminum cans, but with cone tops and a cap you twisted off.

The first pop company to use the new cans was RC Cola and Diet-Rite Cola in 1964.

The pull tabs became a major source of litter. Some people would put the used tabs in the cans and an unfortunate few swallowed them, so much for doing your good deed for the day.

The stay tabs were a big improvement and have no doubt saved millions of bare feet from serious wounds on the beaches of America.

Hey, any collector out there want to buy a slightly-used beer can?

In my younger days, I stepped on my fair share of pop tops and would definitely like to thank whoever invented the stay tab. Thank you very much.
