Trip to "Cheesehead Land"-- Part 4: The Wedding

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

We left the Brown Baer Bar and went to the Osthoff for cocktail hour with open bar and lots of hors d'oeuvres passed around when you could flag one of the fast-moving waiters down.

Again, a proud Wisconsin beer in tap, Spotted Cow from New Glarus.  Sat with Kevin and Kelly.who were glad to be nearing the end if the wedding.

Much relief.  Now they can have fun.

As is the new custom, there was no greeting line as we entered the ballroom (something I don't miss)   They do a lot of weddings and events at the Osthoff and their people keep everything moving along expertly (if not expensively).

However, another new custom seems that the newlyweds do not walk around to tables to thank people for coming.  We never had any words with them at all.  I don't much care for this.

"The Big Easy" Opened My Eyes

There was a time I wasn't really familiar with Louisiana music.  For the most part. I'd never been there and just didn't have much opportunity to hear the music (in those pre-computer streaming days).

Then came the movie "The Big Easy." That shattered my non-knowledge in a big way. I saw it at the theater and just was knocked off my feet by the music. Where in the world is this music coming from and how come I went so long without hearing it? I was hooked immediately. And then started to go out and buy as much zydeco, Cajun and New Orleans music as I could find, starting with the artists performing on the soundtrack.
I now have a good-sized collection of albums, cassettes and CDs of the music and made several cassettes for my deejay shows, especially around Mardi Gras season. I had one traveling tape as well as it is ALWAYS a GOOD TIME to hear Mardi Gras Music.

Hitting the Road Around Here for Fall Color-- Part 2: Getting Your Swiss On in New Glarus

After Lake Geneva, reporter Davis took Wi-50 to Wi-11 to what she called a "very Swiss" Green County, Wisconsin. There were quite a few roads she went on in the process. She went to New Glarus and recommends staying at the Helvetica Inn at 101 3rd Street and dinner at the New Glarus Hotel's restaurant at 100 6th Avenue. They have polka bands on the weekends. I love polka bands.

You can also sample New Glarus-brewed libations like Spotted Cow beer at Puempel's Olde Tavern 16 Sixth Avenue which is popular because of its murals and ban on juke boxes. (Hey, an old jukebox featuring records is always a welcome sight to me.)

Then, there is the New Glarus Brewing where you can get some Spotted Cow or other barley selections that aren't sold in Illinois.

We've been to New Glarus, but after reading this need to get back.
