Along66, March 2022: How Gemstone Avenue Got Its Name and the Big Orange

MARCH 27

Early Route 66 advocate was behind naming Springfield, Missouri's Gemstone Avenue.

John T. Woodruff of Springfield named it after 18th century English poet William Shenstone.  He was also one of the earliest practitioners of landscape gardening.  Woodruff came up with Gemstone because it rhymed with the poet's name.

Gemstone was the Route 66 alignment through town from 1930 to 1977.

And, of course, what more can you say about John T. Woodruff and Springfield, Missouri.

MARCH 30

Repairs, relocation planned for Bono's Historic Orange in Fontana, California.  It once stood on Route 66.

The seven foot tall orange juice stand was built by Bob DeVries in 1931 and was placed in storage after Bono's closed in 2003.

Good to have it back on view.

Along66 March 2022: It's Back... Birthplace of Route 66 Festival and $40,000 in Grants to Small, Historic Restaurants

MARCH 24

Birthplace of Route 66 Festival in Springfield, Missouri, is expanding to three days.  It was just two days.  This year will be the first time it will be held since 2019 because of the coronavirus.

This will be its 10th anniversary and will be held August 11-13 with some 75,000 expected to attend.

This gets its name from the 1926 meeting of transportation officers in Springfield where they informed the federal government that they would accept the "66" number for the new highway.  They had been wanting the number "60".

MARCH 25

The National Trust is offering $40,000 in grants to small historic restaurants.  Some 25 restaurants across the country are in line to receive the grants.

These grants are for improvements, upgrading the exterior, interior and online business.

Along66, March 2022: Missouri's Crystal Cave Reopens and Roy's Featured in Commercials

MARCH 21

The historical Crystal Cave near Springfield, Missouri, will reopen the first time in nearly a decade.  It ids located north of Springfield and includes 72 acres and an 1892 house.  They will be open from 10 to 5 to Sunday.

It was the second commercial Missouri cave to open and in 1893.  The first was the Mark Twain Cave in  (I would have thought the first was Meramec Caverns.)

The Mann family who had immigrated from England opened it.  That family ran it until the 1960s.  Then Estle Funhouser ran it until the 2010s.

MARCH 22

Roy's of Amboy, California, sure was featured often over the NCAA Tournament recently in the Nissan commercials featuring the college mascots.

Roy's opened in 1938 with Roy Crowl, but is best-for owner Buster Burris.  By the late 1940sthere was a garage, motel and restaurant located at the site.  It was open 24 hours a day at that time.

Along66, March 2022: All That Neon (and Some Route 66 Too)

MARCH 9

Three neon Route 66 signs were part of a huge auction next week.

Michael Brown of Arlington, Texas, liquified his huge collection of neon signs March 16-19.  It included more than 180 items, most of which were neon.

The Route 66 signs were the Alamo Liquor sign from Carthage, Missouri, the Frontier Motel from Miami, Oklahoma and one sign saying "Hotel" from southern Illinois, its exact location still undetermined but known to be on Route 66.

The auction is being put on by Mecum Auctions.

They said the Alamo Liquor sign was a single-sided neon one from the 1950s and that it rested in storage for 20 years before being carefully restored.

Hopefully some of the signs will go to places the general public can see them.  You know how I feel about neon.

Along66, March 2022: Ike's Chili Featured on TV

I take these posts from the Route 66 News Blog.  I just pick the ones of most interest to me.  The site has at least one post most every day and has pictures and much more information than I give.   But, if you rally want to know what is going on along the Mother Road, you want to go to this site.  (Plus, my posts are a month old usually.)

MARCH 2, 2022

Ike's Chili of Tulsa, Oklahoma, will have an appearance in the "Drew Barrymore Show."  Ike's is a famous chili which has been served for over a century since 1908.  It has been at its current location at 1503 and 1509 11th Street (Route 66) since 2013.

Earlier it was at Admiral Place (an older alignment of 66) from 1966.

The TV show is a competition and it will be up against two other chili places.  I'll be pulling for it unless one of the other chili places features Cincy Chili.  We have never eaten Ike's Chili, but will be doing so the next time in Tulsa.

I'm also a huge chili fan.  Chili cookoffs help get me through winters.

Good Ike's.  --RoadDog

Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois, Closing-- Part 2

The college has managed to survive other difficult circumstances, including the economic crisis of 1887, a major campus fire in 1912, the Spanish flu of 1918, the Great Depression, World War II and the global economic crisis of 2008.  (They even survived my buddy Mark's brief time as a student there.)

But, now, the coronavirus did it in.

The decision to close comes just two years after the college had seen record-breaking enrollment in 2019 with residence halls at maximum capacity.

There was also a cyber attack in December 2021 that closed down the admission activities.

Sadly, Lincoln College joins a short list of other small private colleges forced to close because of the virus:

Mills College in California, Becker College in Massachusetts, Concordia College in New York and MacMurray College in Illinois.

Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois Closing for Good (On Route 66)

I just came across this today, but Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois, is closing after 157 years of operation.

From April 1, 2022, Forbes "Lincoln College in Illinois to close after 157 years" by Michael T. Nietzel.

Lincoln College is in Lincoln, Illinois, one of the towns on Route 66 and the home of the excellent Lincoln Heritage Museum.

Lincoln University (as it is now) is a small private college which will officially close May 13, 2022, at the conclusion of the current spring semester.  After that date, all academic programming at Lincoln will cease.

The college, which currently has about 1,000 students, is named after Abraham Lincoln.  In addition to the main campus in Lincoln, also named after you-know-who, there is an extension site in nearby Normal, Illinois.

According to the school, the closing comes about because of the financial impact of the coronavirus which impacted recruitment and fundraising efforts.

Sad to see it go.  But, I understand the museum plans to continue.

Fifty Years Ago: The Songs of Your Life in 1972

March 26, 2022, Chicago's WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback to 1972, FIFTY YEARS ago.  Host the Frank E. Lee.

Few things finer than cruising down an old road with the radio blaring and arm out the window.  Here are some songs that will take you right back to a long-ago era of your life.  Back 50 years ago I was a junior at the University of Georgia and living in a trailer off campus and driving my 1963 puke green Rambler station wagon around (burning roughly a quart of oil every 50 miles).  I called it the "Ramblin' Wreck" because it was and then there was that nearby team in Atlanta.

BACK OFF BOOGALOO--   Ringo Starr

REELING IN THE YEARS--  Steely Dan    This song always reminds me of driving the Ramblin' Wreck between Palatine and Maine West High School in Des Plaines, Illinois, while doing my student teaching from NIU.

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 9: It's a Goetta and Cincy Thing You Know

And, I owe a lot to buddy Denny for acquainting me with some neat food and places in Cincinnati.

FINDING JOY IN CINCINNATI

Cincinnati is well-represented in one of the country's most popular cookbooks, "Joy of Cooking," whose ninth edition hit the bookshelves on Nov. 12.  That's no coincidence:  Marion Becker, daughter of original "Joy" author Irma Rombauer, had a home near the city and added regional favorites to cookbook editions after her mother's death.

Those additions include Becker's recipe for goetta.

Co-author John Becker, grandson of Marion, says he wasn't raised on goetta in Cincinnati:  "My father (Ethan Becker) kept his cereals and breakfast meats separate -- usually in the form of halved, pan-fried sausage links and fried cornmeal mush.

These days, John Becker lives in Oregon but still has his Cincy favorites, like chili from Empress and Skyline, as well as ribs and thick chips from Montgomery Inn and "the impeccably roasted chicken" at Floyd's, which serves Lebanese food near the University of Cincinnati.

Other Ohio favorites in "Joy" include buckeye candy, Cincinnati chili Cockaigne, Cincinnati-style cheese Coney hot dog, Ohio farmhouse sausage chili and Ohio Shaker lemon pie.

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 8: And Then There's Glier's Goettafeast

The midsummer Glier's Goettafest began as a one day party in 2001 and has since expanded to eight days of goetta, beer, music and T-shirts emblazoned with slogans like "Goetta Grip" or "Goetta Life."  Goetta is sold in mac and cheese, omelets, nachos and fried rice.  Sliced goetta is fried for sliders, kabobs and glazed doughnuts.  Quesadillas, tacos and calzones are filled with the festival's namesake product.

"When people make this at home, and some still do," Glier says, "it's usually part of a meal at grandma's for Christmas."

This year, Glier's Goettafest runs for two weekend:  July 28-31 and August 4-7 at Newport, Kentucky's Festival Park, right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

There will be entertainment all eight days, including one band I found to have quite the interesting name:  Right Turn Clyde.

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 7: NOT Scrapple and Perhaps an Acquired Taste.

"We use the same premium meats for goetta," says Queen City Sausage marketing director Mark Balasa.  "Ours are not made with meat scraps" and onion is added to deepen flavor.  The company sells 5-pound bricks to pre-sliced packs of goetta.

"They look like hockey pucks," quips founder Elmer Hensler.

Goetta production has tripled in 10 years.

AND, DON'T call it scrapple because "that's mushier" and made with cornmeal, says Glier of Glier's Meats.  he considers it more like a hardy oatmeal than sausage.  Goetta usually stays softer inside than meatloaf, so it breaks apart more easily when sliced or fried.

The ratio of pork to beef matters.  So do the seasonings and choice of steel cut or pinhead oats as the binder.  The mixture simmers for several hours, until the oats balloon and soak in the flavor of the meaty broth.

An acquired taste?  Maybe?

Well, I had some goetta at the suggestion of buddy Denny once in Cincinnati at a neat little breakfast joint, and I liked it right away.  No acquired taste for me.

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 6: Showing Up In All Sorts of Places

What began as a hearty winter food is now sold year-round.  It pops up in some unlikely places.

At Catch-a-Fire Pizza inside Mad Tree Brewing in the Oakley neighborhood, goetta and a cracked egg top the Goetta, Stand Up pie.

"Most of our pizzas are named after Bob Marley songs," say Jeff and Melissa Ledford, the owners.

Roasted garlic and olive oil, caramelized onions, peppadew peppers and cheeses complete the pizza.  Goetta is browned a little before going on the pie, and browns more while baking.

Even Camp Washington Chili, which goes through 60 gallons of chili a day, began sneaking in goetta this year.  But, you have to know to ask for the "513 Way," a customer's creation named after the local area code.

Owner Maria Papakirk says the 53 Way begins with a base of grilled goetta instead of spaghetti.  Then it's standard five-way chili:  red beans, meaty chili sauce, diced onions and shredded cheddar.  The goetta comes from Queen City Sausage, best known for making bratwurst and mettwurst.

Congratulations University of Kansas, 2022 NCAA Basketball Champions

Despite the late start and the fact that the NCAA Basketball Championship game (8 pm here CDST) was only shown on TBS (it should have been CBS so everyone could see it, not just those with cable), this was a very fitting game between Kansas and the University of North Carolina which went right down to the final seconds before the Jayhawks won.

And that is considering that at one point, the Tarheels were up by 15 points causing me to fear another Elite 8 game blow out.  When it comes to Tournament time I am all in for close games and upsets.  And this tournament was all about that.

The whole first four days were that and more, especially with St. Peter's beating Kentucky.  Then, the Sweet Sixteen was that for seven of the eight games.  Elite 8 was the worst.  All four games blowouts as was the first Final Four game, but the second one made up for it.

Till Next Year.  --RoadDog

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 5: It's All About Tradition

A mile north at Findlay Market, midday entrees at French Crust Cafe & Bistro include a flaky pastry with a sauteed veggie relish, poached egg, hollandaise sauce and goetta.  The restaurant is operated by chef Jean-Robert de Cavel, who also brought five-star dining to Cincinnati.  (Who needs five-star dining when you have Cincy Chili!!!)

Eckerlin Meats, a block away sell goetta by the loaf and pound, or sliced and grilled on egg-and-cheese sandwiches.  Eckerland sells 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of goetta weekly.  It's made with only pork shoulder and beef chuck, meaning it's "leaner, higher in fiber and less sloppy," says Josh Lillis, one of several family members working at the butcher shop that's over 150 years old,  The seasoning blend, although proprietary, "is nothing crazy or super unique."

"Goetta used to be made out of necessity,"  Lillis notes.  "Feeding a family meant using an animal from head to toe."

Lollis saus that Cincinnatians care deeply about goetta, especially the West Side neighborhoods that stick to tradition.

"They talk about whether it's too meaty, has too much oats or doesn't flip properly," Lillis says.

Along66, Feb. 2022: It Is Now One Arrow, Arizona

FEBRUARY 28

One of the two landmark arrows at Twin Arrows, Arizona is no more.  It fell.  It was at the abandoned Twin Arrows Trading Post and probably a victim of the high winds of recent days.

Both arrows were restored in 2009.

The trading post closed in 1998 after starting as the Canyon Padre Trading Post in 1949.  It became the Twin Arrows Trading Post in the 1950s when the two 20-foot tall arrows were erected.

The post consisted of a gas station, gift shop and a Valentine's Diner.

The shafts were made from telephone poles.

Let's hope someone puts a new one in its place.

All Fired Up for the Final Four

After last weekend's Elite 8, I am sure hoping we will have some more exciting games today.  Those four games were essentially blowouts.  And, that after those fine sweet Sixteen games on Thursday and Friday.  Seven of eight of the best college games I can remember.

Now that all remaining teams are the Big Boys with no Little Guys left, I pull for my favorite Big Boy teams.

I won't say who for fear of putting a whammy on them, but I have two that I really like.

So, go Villanova, Kansas, Duke and Carolina.

Let's have some exciting games!!

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 4: How Many Ways?

Chefs across the city have embraced goetta as a local product and some are taking culinary risks with it, spicing it up with jalapeno and cayenne.

For the city's famed Oktoberfest (there is a lot of German heritage there), Bisken Bakery made glazed doughnuts filled with cinnamon crunch ice cream and goetta.  Another vendor called "Hey Hey" sold goetta sauerkraut balls.  (Now that sounds real good.)

Taste of Belgium at the Banks, known for its waffles and crepes, serves the slightly sweet Naticrape, filled with a fried egg, goetta, havarti cheese, roasted peppers and onions.

The Netherland eggs Benedict combines goetta, roasted tomatoes and a bernaise aioli on an English muffin at the Grille at Palm Court, inside Cincinnati's downtown Hilton, where executive chef George Zappas makes his own goetta -- a recipe developed while working as the hotel's butcher.

Goetta's Got It Going in Cincinnati-- Part 3: A Lowly Food Arrives and Thrives

Continued from March 14, 2022.

Goetta?

It was a medieval peasant food according to David Glier of Glier's Meats, whose family produces more than a million pounds of goetta every year in Covington, Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati.

What began as a humble German stew of long-simmering oats, seasonings and ground-meat scraps -- pork and beef livers, hearts, tongues, skin and more -- has turned into a food of regional pride, used by chefs in both casual and upscale settings.

Of course, now the ingredients are a little bit better than the originals.

But, there are those, even in Cincinnati who would never touch it, but there are also others who essentially swear by it.  One of them is self-proclaimed "goettaevangelist" Dan Woellert, a food historian and author of "Cincinnati Goetta:  A Delectable History."

According to him, some chefs have taken the lowly goetta to "almost a hipster level."  Even brewers now.  Christian Moerlein Brewing Company released a goetta-inspired beer (made with pinhead oats) for Cincy's first goetta pub crawl this year.

Thanks, Denny for telling me about this delicacy.
