NOVEMBER 24TH
Took my usual route to North Carolina, starting with Illinois Highway 47 in Woodstock and taking it all the way to near its southern terminus in Mahomet, Illinois. I was surprised to make it through Huntley's Main Street Strangler, that horrible wait forever stoplight.
But, more than made up for that at a huge traffic jam and long wait south of Huntley at the 47-72 intersection south of Stark's Corner.
I was shocked to see gas at the Elburn BP station, usually the most expensive along Il-47, at $1,87. Then, I had a long wait for a freight train in downtown Elburn, something that happens often. Those trains that go through DeKalb, also go through here.
I am glad to report that the road construction headache through Yorkville is now completed and it's a fine and easy drive through there now.

The Shamrock Court Motel in Sullivan, Missouri. It can be yours for $125,000. Lots of possibilities. Actually, now you're too late. Missouri's Roamin' Rich bought it.

And Forget Illinois Highway 47 Between Yorkville and Woodstock
May 7, 2015
Looks like we are going to have to find another way to go south from our house in Spring Grove, Illinois, as Il-47 is every bit as bad as Nashville, Tennessee, rush hour, but on a much-smaller scale.
Yesterday, as we were making the last leg of our Beaches Spring trip and with thoughts of home looming, we had a traffic mess essentially from Yorkville, Illinois, to Woodstock. We did a lot of sitting in traffic.
Yorkville's stretch of Il-47 is torn up north of downtown (the southern part is finally finished and a joy to drive, even in rush hour). maybe, one of these days the northern section will be just as good, but it surely isn't now. One huge, 45-minute wait. It didn't make my day.
Then, we had a huge backup at the area where US-20, Il-72 and Il-47 come together at the Stark's Corner area. Lots of construction and long, long waits at each stoplight. I mean, L-O-N-G!!! waits. We're guessing we waited through 3-4 green lights at each light.
Then, Huntley had three straight red lights waiting for us, which caused a huge backup. Then, of course, the infamous, wait-a-long time Main Street Strangler light which formed an even longer line of traffic as we left town.
Then, there was a long wait at the Il-176 from Crystal Lake stoplight and a shorter wait at the 176 to Marengo light a half mile north.
Finally, we were surprised to find that Woodstock was actually not too bad. usually, Il-47 is backed up for a mile during rush hour.
I am planning on avoiding this road for awhile.
Maybe It Was Just a Comparative Thing. --RoadDog

A Cold Trip to NC-- Part 11: What's So Cannonball?
Still stuck in Yorkville, Illinois. In the last post I mentioned Cannonball Road being north of Yorkville off Il-47. It is actually Cannonball Trail. I did some research and found that there is also a subdivision in Yorkville called Cannonball Estates.
Evidently it was just the name a builder came up with as I can find no mention of a cannonball factory in Yorkville.
There is, however, a park named Cannonball Ridge Park at 2087 Northland Lane. The Yorkville Parks site says, "To keep up the theme of Cannonball Estates subdivision, the park has a Civil War theme with a Civil War-style fence, stone walls and prairie grass."

A Cold Trip to NC: Part 10 (March 23, 2014): Yorkville, Illinois
I always have to wonder about Cannonball Road north of Yorkville, Illinois. Did they make cannonballs at some place on it?
In Yorkville now, and I no longer stop at the McDonald's on US-34 where I have stopped many times in the past to use facilities and get a bite to eat or drink. I don't anymore as you take your life in your hands trying to turn across 34 to get back to 47.
Il-47 through downtown Yorkville looks like a war zone. It is all torn up and the small row of businesses look like they're all closed. They have cleared the hillside on the bluff (the Fox River flows just north of the downtown) and you can now really see that impressive courthouse or church sitting on top of it. Looks like they are going to turn the hillside into a park.
Continuing south on Il-47, I see that interesting brick and stone building which houses Berengy Auto Sales which may have been an old gas station.
