The MacArthur Bridge, St. Louis

Earlier this month, I wrote about the MacArthur Bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis.  Here is some more information about it.

From Wikipedia.

The MacArthur Bridge is a truss bridge connecting St. Louis, Missouri, and East St. Louis, Illinois, over the Mississippi River.  It was initially called the St, Louis Municipal Bridge and popularly known as the "Free Bridge" because there were no tolls charged.  However, tolls were added for autos in 1932.   In 1942, it was renamed the MacArthur Bridge after World War II General Douglas MacArthur.

The bridge was constructed to break the monopoly that the Terminal Railroad  Association had on St. Louis as they controlled the other two bridges across the Mississippi and charged what were considered to be unreasonable tolls.

Upon completion, it was the largest double deck steel bridge in the world.
