Springfield, Illinois, almost lost Route 66 Mother Road Festival. Always a fun thing.
It returns in September for its 20th year after one year off for the you-know-what. But, it was an almost wasn't as Bonner Events, which had managed it for so long is stepping away from it. However, Greg Cooper will take it over.
This year it will be September 24-26. Typically it draws between 60,000 and 80,000 people over three-day run Friday to Sunday. Other than the Illinois State Fair, it is Springfield's most popular event.
We went to the first two events when it was the Route 66 International Festival and had a great time and was another reason why we ended up getting so hooked on the road and all old roads for that matter. Since then, we have been to about four of them.
Here's hoping they have it this year as the you-know-what is storming back.
